Overshirt
Sort by
An overshirt is the layer you reach for when a shirt feels too light but a winter coat is more than you need. Cut like a shirt, with a collar and buttons, it is made in a heavier fabric and worn over other clothes. Our collection brings together styles for women and men, from checked overshirts and lined shirt jackets to wool blends and soft teddy-lined designs. Their relaxed western and workwear character makes them easy to wear from town to the ranch.
Overshirt, shacket or shirt jacket?
These names describe much the same idea. An overshirt is a shirt designed to be worn over other layers. Shacket blends “shirt” and “jacket” and often refers to roomier checked styles, especially in women’s fashion. Shirt jacket is another clear term. Whatever you call it, think of a versatile mid-layer: warmer than a shirt, yet lighter and easier to move in than a jacket.
Styles in the collection
Checked shirt jacket
A checked shirt jacket is a timeless choice. Red, green and brown patterns bring to mind ranch life and the outdoors, while the relaxed style works just as well in town as at the stables.
Lined shirt jacket
With teddy, fleece or quilted lining, these are among the warmest styles in the collection. They are a practical choice for a chilly autumn day, worn with just a jumper underneath.
Wool shirt jacket
Wool-blend styles feel substantial, help block the wind and retain warmth in damp weather. They often have a more structured fit and a polished look.
Women’s shackets and long styles
Choose from roomy shackets, long shirt jackets that cover the hips, cropped cuts and belted styles that define the waist. Selected designs are also available in plus sizes.
How to choose the right shirt jacket
Size and fit
A shirt jacket should leave room for a layer underneath. Choose your usual size to wear it over a T-shirt or light shirt. If you plan to add a chunky knit, check the shoulder measurements in the size guide. Oversized styles are already cut for a roomier fit.
Warmth
An unlined flannel or twill style suits late summer and spring. For autumn and milder winter days, choose a lined shirt jacket or a wool style.
Women’s or men’s?
Men’s styles tend to have straighter cuts and broader shoulders, while women’s designs may be shorter, longer or shaped at the waist. Many women also choose a men’s fit for a relaxed oversized look.
How to style your shirt jacket
Wear it open over a hoodie or T-shirt with jeans and boots for an easy workwear look. For a stronger western feel, pair a checked style with bootcut jeans, a western belt and cowboy boots. A long shacket also layers well over a knit dress or with a skirt and tall boots. When temperatures drop, wear your shirt jacket under a vest or a roomier winter coat.
When to wear a shirt jacket
A shirt jacket is one of the most versatile pieces in a western wardrobe. Wear it for a weekend at the stables, a walk in the woods or a late-summer concert or market. At work, a wool style in muted colours can stand in for a blazer; on a trip, it is a useful layer to take on and off as the temperature changes. Its forgiving fit and timeless style also make it a thoughtful gift.
Care
Wash at 30°C, inside out and with similar colours. For wool and lined styles, use a gentle cycle or air the garment between wears. Avoid tumble drying and leave it to dry on a hanger.
Frequently asked questions about shirt jackets
Can a shirt jacket replace a coat?
In spring, late summer and autumn, yes—especially lined and wool styles. In winter, it works best as a mid-layer.
Should you button up a shirt jacket?
Either way works. Wear it open for a relaxed look or buttoned for extra warmth and a more jacket-like feel.
